Krauss Trust gift advances postdoctoral fellowship support at Harvard Medical School

A $1 million gift from the Melvyn B. Krauss Trust is strengthening Harvard Medical School’s support for early-career scientists at a time when federal research funding is increasingly uncertain. This generosity will help ensure that promising postdoctoral fellows have the necessary resources to pursue groundbreaking research.

Melvyn B. Krauss, PhD, who passed away in 2023, was a renowned expert on international economics and economic development, celebrated for his incisive analysis and independent thinking. He served as a professor of economics at New York University and as the William L. Clayton Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. Krauss also taught at institutions internationally, including the London School of Economics, the University of Amsterdam, and the University of Stockholm. 

Beyond his distinguished academic career, Krauss believed deeply in supporting progress through medical research and discovery. His legacy lives on at HMS through this gift, which aids postdoctoral fellows conducting research on the School’s Quad. These scholars play a central role, driving innovation and laying the foundation for tomorrow’s medical breakthroughs.

HMS supports about 700 postdocs on its campus and an additional 4,000 at affiliated hospitals, offering programs and resources that promote professional growth and foster a vibrant community. “We’re proud to have such an active and supportive postdoc community,” says James Gould, PhD, director for postdoctoral affairs at HMS. “It’s a strength that helps us attract the best talent to HMS—and it is made possible through philanthropy like this.”

Postdocs face a unique set of challenges during this transitional stage in their careers. Many have moved far from home to pursue training at HMS, balancing the demands of intensive research with the pressures of uncertain funding, temporary positions, and the high cost of living in Boston. In addition to making vital contributions at the bench, they must navigate complex decisions about their futures, whether in academia, industry, or other fields. 

“The biggest challenge is figuring out what the next career step is and then how to actually transition to it,” Gould says. He notes that ongoing support, mentorship, and community are essential for postdocs as they chart their professional course.
